After the resounding success of the course in which the Swedish film The Emigrants was used to illustrate the struggles and hardships of 19th century immigration to the United States, a sequel seemed inevitable. Luckily for us, the makers of the film have one for us to view. The New Land completes the story of Karl Oskar (Max von Sydow), Kristina (Liv Ullmann), Robert (Eddie Axberg) and their friends and family who braved a long ocean voyage and difficult journey to establish a new life in Minnesota in the 1850s. This installment of At the Movies will present that film for those of you who were moved by The Emigrants and want to find out how the saga concludes.
