026 Christmas Tree Ship-The Saga of a Legendary Ship and its Much Beloved Captain
In-Person | Registration opens 8/6/2025 9:00 AM CDT
The story of the Rouse Simmons, which disappeared beneath the waves in a winter gale in November 1912. Captain Herman E. Schenermann, who was born in the settlement of Ahnapee, now Algoma, was a 30 year veteran of hauling Christmas Trees from Michigan and Northern Wisconsin to the docks of Chicago. The schooner was last seen with its load of 5000 trees with its distress flag up, off the shore of Kewaunee County. The class will examine the history of the ship, its captain, cargo, and crew. For the first time, the class will be held at the Algoma Boat Club on the shore of the Ahnapee River. After class you may want to visit Christmas Tree Point, where the river enters the lake. The Captain’s home still stands on Church Street near the river.
