010 At the Movies: Hollywood and the Blacklist

In-Person | Registration opens 8/6/2025 9:00 AM CDT

This is a companion course to The Age of McCarthyism and American Culture in the 1950s, Larry Desotell. The “Hollywood Blacklist” which resulted from fear of communist influence in the film community, spurred by the House Committee on un-American Activities investigations following the end of World War II and Senator Joseph McCarthy’s crusade in the 1950s against “Reds” in the government, was-and continues to be-one of the most controversial chapters in Hollywood history, marked by vindictiveness, fear, shameful cowardice and surprising heroism among many celebrities caught up in the events of the period. This installment of “At the Movies”, presented in conjunction with Larry Desotell’s examination of the McCarthy period of the 1950s, will consider two films that depict the lives of people embroiled in the events of that era: Trumbo, a biopic about the life and career of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, arguably the most famous figure of the “Hollywood Ten”, the first group of film personages held in contempt of Congress who were jailed and blacklisted; and Good Night, and Good Luck, which depicts newsman Edward R. Murrow’s historic confrontation with McCarthy on television that effectively ended McCarthy’s crusade.
