008 At the Movies: Hollywood Gets Depressed
In-Person | Registration opens 1/8/2025 9:00 AM CST
NOTE: This is a companion course to A Cultural Analysis of the Great Depression, Larry Desotell. The Great Depression had as profound an impact upon Hollywood as it did upon the rest of the country, vividly depicted in films made during the time of the Depression as well as generations later. This installment of At the Movies will feature two films, shown in conjunction with A Cultural Analysis of the Great Depression, that seek to dramatize the conditions, the people, and the experiences of that particular time in the nation’s history. The first, The Grapes of Wrath, is John Ford’s 1940 adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, starring Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. The second, Bonnie and Clyde, is Arthur Penn’s 1967 groundbreaking bio-pic about the infamous Depression era criminals who became icons of the era, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
