In-Person | Available (Membership Required)

This course delves into the transformative world of fiber optic technology, spotlighting the project to connect Washington Island with high-speed internet. This enlightening course covers the fundamentals of how fiber optics utilize light to transmit data through glass or plastic fibers, vastly outperforming traditional copper wires in speed and reliability. Participants will receive an in-depth explanation of GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks), a key technology enabling efficient high-speed internet distribution. Additionally, a live splicing demonstration will provide a hands-on look at the precision required to join fiber optic cables, ensuring seamless data transmission. This course aims to demystify fiber optic technology, highlighting its critical role in modern telecommunications and the technical achievements of projects like Washington Island’s connectivity initiative.
