017 Christmas Tree Ship
In-Person | Available (Membership Required)
The story of the ship Rouse Simmons, which disappeared beneath the waves in a winter gale in November 1912. Captain Herman E. Schenemann, who was born in the settlement of Ahnapee, now Algoma, was a 30-year veteran of hauling Christmas trees from Michigan and Northern Wisconsin to the docks of Chicago. The schooner was last seen with its load of 5000 trees with its distress flag up, heading south off the shore of Kewaunee.
This class will examine the history of the ship, its cargo, captain, crew, and the October 1971 discovery of its final resting place.
