Impressionistic Oil Painting Using the Palette Knife, 4 sessions on Tuesdays, May 14-June 4, 1-4pm

Come and have fun learning to paint with a palette knife. The textures and colors possible are a delight for the soul! Although she will be concentrating on painting landscapes, any subject is possible. She will encourage students most of all to “play” and let go of the idea of everything having to be a masterpiece. Many times LESS is MORE. In each class there will be demonstrations and lots of one on one instruction. She will teach specifically about the importance of composition and design; using color theory to bring your painting to life; and the general process of painting a landscape, working from large to small shapes. This workshop is suitable for experienced beginners to advanced painters.

  • Supply list:

    Nitrile gloves

Several of your favorite landscape photos that YOU have taken (either printed or on electronic device) Your phone will be too small to paint from, but an ipad or laptop will be fine.

    Pen or pencil

    Painting apron/smock

    9x12 mixed media journal

Canvas boards, stretched canvas or even mat board cutoffs (at least 8”x10”)

For the textured under painting: full spectrum of acrylic colors (if heavy body, you will need to thin them slightly with matte medium), plus black and white (no browns or grays). Cheap ones like Artist’s Loft are perfect!

Quiller color wheel (you can find one online if you do not own a physical one)

Artist grade oil paints, mainly single pigment colors plus Titanium white/Zinc white mix. I also like Zinc white for glazing.

Paint palette (I use Masterson Palette Seal) I use a sheet of grey palette paper in the bottom with a sheet of glass over it.

    Paper towels

Used, clean plastic bags or the sealed air packing from boxes or saran wrap for making the acrylic underpainting.

1”-2” brush for applying the clear gesso.

Your preferred paint brushes for landscape painting (I use mainly bristle rounds and flats for oils, mainly synthetic rounds and flats for acrylics, ¾”- ¼” flats/1-4 rounds)

Flexible palette knife for painting. If you have never painted with a palette knife before, bring a few different styles to see what you like.

    Water container

    Odorless Mineral Spirits

Liquin or something similar for glazing

    Clear gesso

    Vine charcoal
