Pastels

Adult Class | This program is completed

Pastel, pure pigment in stick form, is an immediate and versatile medium. Using sanded paper and underpainting techniques, a wide variety of effects are possible. The focus in this class will be on the landscape with particular attention to value, composition, and use of color to convey light in the natural world. We will experiment with a variety of underpainting techniques as a way to start a painting and since it’s winter we will work from photos.

  • PASTELS:
    An assortment of pastels:

    hard (Nupastels, Cretacolor),medium(Girault, Rembrandt) and

softer (Mt Vision, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig) in a variety of colors and values.

If you have no pastels, I would recommend a set of Rembrandt or NuPastel or Cretacolor or Richeson, all of which have sets with a variety of colors and are good starter sets. I would recommend a Rembrandt 1/2 stick set - either a 60 or 90 set, which have a good variety of colors and are a good workhorse pastel.

    PAPER:
There is a paper fee for this course so I will be ordering UArt 400 and Art Spectrum Colorfix paper in 9x12 size to get everyone started. We will talk about paper in class.

    SUPPORT:
3/16 Foamcore ( white or black) or Gatorboard

    EASELS:
Art Alliance has easels but if you have a portable one you can bring it. A table top easel will work on the tables in the studio or a Plein air set up will work as a stand alone.

    MISCELLANEOUS:
Tape, sketchbook, HB or 2B pencils, vine charcoal

    PHOTOS:
Bring several photos you would like to work from. We will discuss what makes a useful photo in the first class

ADDITIONAL (the following can be useful but not required):

Blending tools (makeup sponge, packing peanuts,

    Foam pipe insulation)

    Watercolor or acrylic paint

Water or Alcohol or Odorless mineral spirits

Barrier cream for hands or gloves

    Paper towels
